You are Awesome! How I Pushed Back at Myself and Took Control of My Worth

How do we let go of what we think will happen?  And where do we find our confidence?  For example, as entrepreneurs we think if we put in all the work, do all the social media, write the posts, list the products, etc.  It will translate into a growth in business.  The more work you put in equals tangible growth which in turn creates a feeling of validation.

But what happens when you get a little mixed up?  I recently had a bit of a lightbulb moment with a misplaced need for validation.

I’ve been at this for almost 3 years now, pretty hard core for a good 2.  Those 2 years I spent a lot of time and effort (along with undue stress) on garnering the attention of someone/s.   It never worked out and it was really bugging me again last weekend.

I was feeling pretty shit about it (truth here), I spent a good hour and half thinking about why was this such a big deal?!  Why am I letting this get to me so much?

I realized it was because this entire time I felt like if I succeeded at getting their attention somehow that would validate me as a REAL interior stylist.  Someone that can actually succeed in a career with this and have it not just be a “hobby”.

And within minutes of not only realizing this but FACING it I kicked my own ass.  I kid you not, it was like my stubborn fierce side came out and immediately dropkicked those thoughts.  Hey there biotch WTF?!  You know you have something to offer and ideas to share.  Why would you give your power and confidence away?

The minute I let myself own it and address it I felt like a million tons of weight had lifted.  I didn’t feel that dread in my gut of feeling not good enough.  It’s incredible what some perspective and a real reality check can do.

We don’t need that outside validation, we just need OURSELVES.  Believe in yourself.  Believe you are a great mom, you are a great artist, you are talented, you are smart, etc.  Believing in yourself gives you immense power to do incredible things.

Translating this into a business perspective, I’ve mentioned this before (here) but what is happening in my biz (ups and downs) is EXACTLY where I’m supposed to be right now.  This is to give me a break, this is to teach me patience, this is to teach me organization, etc….. Sometimes we don’t know what it’s teaching us but I’m working on just embracing that.

But handing over the reins of my “expected” growth really lets me just be.  I can think clearer, come up with all kinds of fun design ideas, be happier, work better and more productively.  It’s a labor of love which is exactly how it started and what it’s supposed to be.

There really is something in finding confidence and peace with the ebbs and flows of life and biz. (more on the ebbs and flows here)  Let the universe or God or your path (whichever you relate to) guide you and show you what you need.  It’s incredibly freeing!

What is your approach to handling the ebb and flow of running a business?  How about maintaining that confidence?  I always love to hear from you and learn from each other!
