What Does Your Home Say About You? + Creating Spaces that Reflect Your Personality

I read a caption the other day, they were talking about color in homes vs neutrals and what they each “say” about those that live there.  So I thought it would be fun to pose the question:

“What does your home say about your personality?”

After all the entire concept of interior design is that our environments affect the way we feel, the way we function, the way we sleep, etc.  This is why color theory is so important, the way each color evokes emotion.

I’ve designed different spaces in our home depending on who uses them (and their personality aka bedrooms) and how I want them to feel.  So here are a couple of contrasting spaces to show you some examples of what I’m talking about!

This is the most used bathroom in our house.  It’s a small powder bath right off of the main family room.  It’s got no windows, one light source and a small footprint.  I wanted to create a space that felt like you weren’t in a dark bland cave but rather a fun jungle like space.  It feels so much happier and larger given the print and splash of color.  A much better space to pee than before haha.

Contrasting this look is our bathroom.  It’s a much larger space but instead of going bold and fun I wanted a very sophisticated but serene spa like space.

A bathroom that felt elegant yet not fussy but with a splash fun.  The light fixture adds some edge and glam while the pink marble brings in my color.  The rest is very understated but stands on it’s own due to the materials and mix.  I also have the Mirror of Erised on the vanity and some wallpaper in the handkerchief size water closet.

Both bathrooms have some pink but that’s where the similarities end.  They have completely different aesthetics yet they are in the same house.  I love both and they both feel exactly as I wanted them to for their respective purposes.

My little ones bedroom.  The entire room is white with a black ceiling and one bold wall mural.  It’s so perfectly them with their vibrant personalities but the mural is tempered by the walls and ceiling.  This room was designed to reflect their own individual style.  I was under strict instructions that no color that could possibly be mistaken as girly was allowed.

Contrasted with our daughter’s bedroom.  She loves color and movement and is a big creative (I wonder where she gets that from?!)

We did a bold wall mural on the ceiling and styled her room around that along with her antique bed.  All the colors, patterns and royalty vibes up in here.  She is our only daughter after all.  Also she is wanting to make some changes so we’re currently talking paint colors, we’ll see where this goes!

How about 2 rooms in the basement that are right next to each other and are very different?!  This is the fam room down there (although the couch sitch is a bit different now, I will take some fresh shots to show you the changes I swear)  But the rest is the same.

This room was designed specifically with our kids in mind. I wanted to give them and their friends a space to go and hang out.  They watch movies, tv, play video games, do just dance and board games all down here.  Thus I wanted it to be fun and energetic.

On the other side of the wall with the painting is this room.  A media/movie room that I finally paid some much overdue attention to last fall.  It’s black top to bottom with a few pops of color and an uber cozy sofa.

I really wanted to evoke a cozy encompassing feel so you are part of the movie when you watch.  It envelopes you in the space while being super comfy and not bland.   You know I can’t do bland : )

While all the spaces have elements of color it’s done in different ways.  I have to have some color because color is legit life for me.  But each space speaks a bit differently based on what its function is and who uses it.  Some are more tempered and some are more bold.

What do these spaces say to you?  What does it make you think we’re like?  And how about your home?  What do you think it says about your personality? Let us know in a comment below!
