Funfetti Laundry Room Makeover: The Design, DIY’s & Before’s!
It’s week 1 of the spring One Room Challenge! If you’re not familiar, the ORC is a really fun event that draws designers, diy’ers and bloggers together with the challenge to complete one space in 6-8 weeks. Hosted by the One Challenge Team and Better Homes and Gardens, this will be my 6th, yes 6th time participating. (See my previous ORC projects here, here, here, here, here)
I’m so excited about this one, I’ve been dying to share! We are DIY’ing a full laundry room reno and it couldn’t come soon enough, it’s like 10 years overdue for so many reasons.
Laundry Room Reno
How about some before pics so you can see what we are dealing with.
Looking from the house into the laundry room. That white door is the garage door and our most used entrance/exit. The laundry room footprint clocks in at 9’7″ x 8’8″ in size.
Coat rack is busted and has got to go!
Looking in to the right is the laundry. There is a row of uppers, one tall cabinet and a sink right on the corner. The footprint can’t be changed so we have to work with the space we have.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught my hip on that sink corner ugh.
This is standing at the tall cabinet looking out with the sink in the bottom left corner of the shot. The door on the right is a coat closet.
We have done nothing to this room other than a fixture and painting it light blue a hundred years go.
Here is the full laundry space wall. The top shelves in the cabinets can only be reached by the 2 tallest members of the fam so it’s basically useless.
Notice how crazy dark it is in here and the dark ugly brown tile does not help.
We put pieces of plywood around the washer and dryer to give ourselves more of a countertop to use, but it’s really high. The sink is in a really dumb spot and the corner next to the sink….there is nothing under the counter. It’s completely dead space.
Clearly we’ve got some functionality issues.
This is what the issues are:
-Lack of usable storage with upper cabinets, they’re pretty much useless due to height and depth differences from    the W/D
-Sink in terrible spot, lots of ouchies plus 1/2 the cabinet can’t be opened
-Dead space in corner next to sink under counter
-Lack of counter space, existing height of W/D too tall for kids to use as a counter
-Dark and dreary, most used entrance/exit in the house
And now my plan to fix it!
Ooo la la!
The breakdown:
*Stack W/D on the left and install cabinet on top for added storage (mittens, hats, basically the stuff in the existing    box up there) and create a built in space.
*Full length of base cabinets with a shift of the sink into far right corner.
*Open shelving for a light airy feel while still providing additional storage for things like vases, detergent            pods, etc
*DIY install white marble in a herringbone pattern for interest and to brighten up the space
*Bold fun wallpaper throughout with a deep teal paint color on cabinets, doors and trim
*I will be DIY painting the new cabinets (I ordered them unfinished, more on why and how to come!)
*DIY gold leaf finish an existing mirror I have to go in place of coat rack
*DIY a concrete countertop, source and install sink and faucet
*Have plumbing moved for sink shift and W/D shift to the left
*Fun Bold flushmount fixture that won’t hit my son in the head everyday
*Organize coat closet to fit jackets, backpacks, etc
We have a ton of DIY in this project (who am I kidding, every project) so I have lots of tips and tricks coming up as we go and I plan to make this as budget friendly as possible. Stay tuned for the full cost breakdown and all the how to’s!
