$9.99 Thrift Store Find Turned Abstract Art

There’s nothing better than a simple and easy DIY project amiright?!  I just shared the DIY bar panel (check it out here!) and then this one came along as a random idea from a thrift store find.

I spotted this textured, ceramic cone wreath and immediately thought how cool it would look taken apart.  At $9.99 it was a bit spendier than I would have liked but since I wanted to make some sculptures out of it, decided it was worth it.

Just as it was from the thrift store.  I think someone made these ceramic pieces which I love.

It was held together with a basic metal hanger and hooked at the top.  First step was just unhooking and carefully taking off each piece.

I saved the small “bell” pieces from the top too.

This was the first one I put together.  Using the same metal hanger it came with, I made a hook at the bottom as the anchor and then carefully bent the hanger as I went to get the form I wanted.

This took me about 15 minutes.  The trickiest part was figuring out how to balance the weight and keep the shape.

I loved the way it flowed in a natural way but it felt like it needed something at the bottom to contrast the white and provide a visual foundation.  We had some leftover wood in the garage so we just cut some squares of it for this.

For the second piece I wanted to make, it was going to be a vertical design.  We anchored another clothes hanger (this one was a metal pants hanger, much stronger than the basic hanger) to the base with a large headed screw.

Tip: Pull apart the hanger using plyers, it was tough to straighten as it was a much stronger metal.

And the final result!  The left piece was the second one I made in the more vertical design.  The bases give a consistent and contrasting look.

These will look neat together or separate.

Here’s my favorite shot!  The movement, the texture and for $9.99, not too shabby.

You can peep just a teensy amount of the wire inside, but only when you are looking up close and personal.

And from above, just for fun!  This was all about going for an organic look that could be anything the viewer sees.
