If the Floor Fits, Dance on It! My Kährs Palazzo Dream
We’ve reached week 6 of the One Room Challenge, only 2 more to go until the big reveal! We didn’t share week 5 progress in solidarity with and recognition of social injustices and #blacklivesmatter, enough is enough. Listen, learn, act, vote. The time is now.

This week we are moving into the main bedroom! The change I was most looking forward to here was the floor. I am not a carpet fan and I was itching like a bad case of poison ivy to put down something different, sophisticated and just plain gorgeous.

Enter my friends over at Kährs Flooring! I found Kährs when I was searching for a unique patterned floor. Not only did they have a gorgeous product but the more I learned about them the more I loved them.
Kährs began over 160 years ago in Sweden in a small village, which continues to be the location of their base of operations. In 1941 they invented, yes literally invented, modern engineered flooring. They have been at the forefront as a leader in the world of flooring and flooring production. To learn more fun facts check em out here.
Not only did I really like the fact that they invented engineered flooring but what really made me love them was their environmentally sustainable focus. They are actively involved in sustainable reforestation planting 5 new trees for every tree harvested. 88% of the raw material used to create their flooring comes from within 124 miles. The first to use a solvent free finish and glue-less installation with their Woodloc joints. Kährs also developed a system to use wood waste (including the saw dust) by recycling it into energy for local homes. If that isn’t the coolest thing ever I don’t know what is, they literally are my spirit animal flooring company.
Now let’s talk flooring! Feast your eyes on their Oak Palazzo line.
These are the 3 colors it comes in; Fumo, Rovere and Bianco
I chose to go with their Oak Palazzo Fumo. We liked the richness in the tones and an added bonus… it has a french chateau/manor (oo fancy) feel.
The warmth of the wood plays off of the sliding door and it’s wood trim in the bathroom balancing out all of the black and white.
It arrived in plastic wrapped packages in 8 ft boards.
I was weirdly (according to my fam) bubbly when I took this pic, as in bouncing up and down with excitement to put it down. A new gorgeous floor, can ya blame me?!
We used Kährs combo system underlayment with the flooring. This was SO easy!
The difference this made in the echo-ing sound we had in here was unbelievable.
We started out by doing rows with an overlap on the perimeter. This overlap is trimmed down later once you get your boards down.
Making sure our overlap was on point.
And the easiest thing ever, it has a sticky tape line. Peel the backing off and press to the floor. Bam done.
Here our son stood at this spot to hold the underlayment in place while we pulled the sticky.
The whole floor covered and ready to roll.
Even the underlayment was an improvement over the carpet haha.
We opened each package as we were ready to use it. They recommend this instead of traditional acclimating.
Not one single board was damaged. Every piece was usable and we had virtually no waste.
This photo shows just how simple this was to install. Hold and slide in at an angle, tap with a block to make sure your joint is tight and then press down locking into place.
I spy a photobomber
As the boards are all the same and we needed them to offset each other to create the pattern, we used a chop saw to easily cut them to different lengths to maintain the pattern. We used the cut pieces on the ends as you don’t have the lock system on the cut ends, it worked perfectly.
Once we got a rhythm down on what size boards fit in each row it went fast.
Here is where we ran into the entry, which is this weird little nook. We decided to run the boards all the way up and come back at the end to custom cut a small strip to fit that inner little section.
We left a 1/4-1/2 inch gap on the perimeter for expansion of the floor.

It smells so good.
This shot shows you the piece that locks it into the board before it as well as the wood “teeth” to create their Woodloc joint.
Once you pop the board down you push in the little yellow piece and it securely locks it into place.
After we got the floor in we came back and added a 1/2″ quarter round trim painted to match the trim we had painted prior to putting in the floor.
The trim is the same color as the walls in a semi gloss.
Ok whaaatttt?! I am beyond stoked with how this floor looks. It’s elegant, it’s unique, it’s rich in color, it’s old world….it’s perfect.

How does it look against the bathroom? Umm well absolutely spectacular.
See how it picks up on the door and trim in the bathroom? Plus the pattern play here is giving my heart all the extra beats.
We did a transition piece at the entry door and continued the flooring all the way into the closet seamlessly.
And this is love
I have to show one more pulled back shot to give you a better feel because well, no explanation necessary.
The mixture of light and dark wood tones gives so much depth.
This floor was so easy to install. It was as simple as click, tap, snap. We’ve laid traditional hardwood flooring (1500 sq ft) and this was so much easier. Not to mention you can’t get such tight joints with traditional (at least not in my experience). I’ve already said if we ever move, we’re taking the floor with us. (The beauty of a floating install!)
