My Visit to Schlumpsville & How I Deal with the Schlumps

It doesn’t sound so bad with that title does it?  Like “Hey Schlumps how are ya?!” but dang if it isn’t a terrible place to visit amiright?!  We all have those days when we just fall into the unfortunate circumstance of being in Schlumpsville.  When you aren’t feeling it AT ALL.

I was feelin frustrated, overwhelmed, and just plain yuck.  This happens every now and again, I mean life right?!  So I figured out the best way for me to deal with it is in a few ways.  I take a step back, do my favorite thing ever, and focus on my family.

Taking a step back means I do my best to stop thinking about it, whatever is causing the frustration or overwhelmed feeling. This usually looks like staying off my phone, watching some Netflix and literally just putting it on the backburner.  I’ve also found that hopping on the rowing machine helps too.

What’s my fave thing ever, you ask?  That’d be thrifting!  The thrill of the hunt is half the fun, so even though I may not find anything it feels really good to get out there and just wander the aisles.  You never know when that diamond in the rough will be around the corner!

This kid is always good for a laugh.  He likes dad jokes as much as I do!

And focus on my family.  This can be watching a movie with my daughter or taking my boys out and getting Intajuice or hangin out my teen son.  Another fun thing we try to do is go out on a day date.  My husband and I go out and even something as simple as running errands together without the kids and squeezing in a lunch counts.  It’s about making that effort to spend time together even just for a couple of hours regardless of the activity.

Goofy like me, she’s my fave thrifting partner in crime!

After shifting my focus even just for a day or 2 makes all the difference.  It’s like when I push my mind too hard and short circuit it, so just by putting all that down for a bit let’s me come back to it clear, focused and ready to sort it out.

My chatterbox, full of great conversation and the best hugs

A couple of years ago I made a very conscious choice to only allow and bring things into my life that brought positivity to it.  And eliminating the things that don’t.  Sometimes that means checking in with myself and saying “does this bring me happiness, does this bring something positive into my life?”  helps too.  That also allows me to refocus, recognizing that I’m not doing myself any favors by forcing it.  It’s like giving myself permission to take a day or 2.

My snuggler with the biggest heart

After some of the above time I’m ready to tackle the world again.  It’s ok to visit Schlumpsville and it’s ok give yourself a hot minute to deal with the Schlumps.

How do you deal with the Schlumps?  Any tips or tricks you use?

I always love to hear from ya so hit me up in the comments!

I totally agree with you! You have a beautiful family and a gorgeous home so it’s good to just put everything else on pause and enjoy them. I’m in overwhelm with this move and trying to unpack, figure out where things should go, etc. I had a meltdown the other day and realized I had to have a mental break. Sometimes we push ourselves too hard and create unrealistic expectations which can lead us down the wrong path. Maybe we should make it a point to check in with ourselves weekly and make adjustments more often???

Have a blessed day and enjoy each moment! ?

Thank you so much Pat! 100% on point, we do push ourselves too hard and then you run into burnout or just sheer mental and emotional exhaustion. I LOVE your idea of weekly check ins with ourselves. I am going to make a point to start doing that! xoxo
