DIY Ikea Applaro Sectional Makeover Update!

A handful of years ago I took on refinishing our Ikea Applaro sectional.  Unfortunately it had turned to crap in only 2 summers and instead of spending a whole lotta money to buy a new set I decided to try fixing it up.

But since it’s been one of my most popular posts to date I thought it was well past time to give you an update on how the finish has worn and whether I would do it again.

Here’s what it looks like as of this morning.

It’s been sitting out all summer, every summer for the last 4 years.   It also has sat in the snow more than once.

The biggest wear spot has to be the front of the legs.  This could be due to taking more wear and tear than the rest of it.  We stack the pieces when we store it, so the bottom legs get hit quite a bit when we put it away and bring it out every summer.

This would be really easy to touch up, I just haven’t done it yet.

Lifting the cushions so you can see the seat.  Excuse the dirt, ahem someone didn’t spray it down before taking pics shhhh.  But it’s in perfect condition!

There is no chipping or peeling at all.  It’s as smooth as the day I painted it.

I shared shots of the end pieces in the original post.  Here are how the same shots look today.  It’s holding up so well I’m really happy with it.

The other end piece.  With the exception of some dirt and flecks the paint is looking awesome.

The wood pieces are doing so much better than the cushions.  I will probably try an upholstery paint on those and see how it goes.  I’ll definitely share that when I try it!

I have been very happy with how this has done.  I would absolutely do this project again.  It saved us so much money on not having to buy new and it is unique and customized for some extra oomph on the patio.

 I am still in love with this color.  It not only wears beautifully (as in no wear) but it goes with every accent color imaginable.  You have maximum flexibility for pillow and accessory action.   Here is that original post showing the process step by step and exact paint product and colors used.
