One Room Challenge Week 3: Demo, Paint and Scaffolding

It’s week 3 of the One Room Challenge and we have been hitting the ground running.  When you are doing 3 spaces you better be ready to roll right?!  If you missed the rooms I’m doing and the plans you can peep those here and here.

Now for what we’ve been working on!  It all started with some demo.  We tore out the carpet in all of the bedrooms and hallway followed by popping up the tack strips and staples.  Next up it was time to go after that horrendous half wall railing.

It was such a happy day to start tearing it all out.  We’ll be dealing with the electrical that was for the lights and the rest will be going.

Then there is the scaffolding…..this was a bit of an add on project to the ORC.  Since I have these big plans for the railing and the flooring, leaving the ugly brown ceiling (which I’ve been wanting to get rid of for 10 years) just wasn’t right.

The ceilings are 20 ft high so we needed 3 sections.

The first task to painting up there was to assemble the sections and tape off all of the beams, as we didn’t want overspray on those.  It was both good and bad.  The tape stuck great on the beams in some places and others just didn’t want to at all.  We had to keep fixing it as we went along.

After taping off the beams and the fireplace wall we covered the chandelier and draped plastic on just about everything.

Finally it was time to use the sprayer and start painting!  It took 2 passes to completely cover the brown.  Wow was it worth it!  It feels so bright and fresh and the beams really pop.

This is a glimpse, more on the finished ceiling soon.

I also painted all of the trim up here including B’s room a semi gloss black (Caviar).

We removed the base trim and doors and painted those with the sprayer.

2 of the bedroom doors, 2 hallway closet doors and interior closet doors all sanded and sprayed Caviar.

If your doors/trim haven’t been painted before and were stained, make sure to do a sanding to rough up the finish.  This will allow your paint to adhere much better and give a better overall finished product.

In A’s room I painted all of the trim this gorgeous rich teal, Bermuda Turquoise by Benjamin Moore  It is a beautiful complimentary (almost matched) color to the base tones in the wallpaper that will be going in here.  We also sprayed the ceiling the same crisp white as the main area.

I can’t tell you how much I love this color!

And last but not least we reinstalled the doors and added their new hardware from Delaney Hardware.  I am OBSESSED with these knobs and plan to outfit the entire house in them!  They are absolutely stunning, heavy duty and incredibly well made.  A huge shoutout to Delaney as my hardware sponsor and for their incredible product.   Wait until you see them on the turquoise (it’s a knockout pairing!)

These are from their Bravura line, the 900 brass collection with crystal knob.
