2 Easy & Inexpensive DIY Wall Art Projects

Howdy do!  I’m back and it feels so good.  A nice long break turned out to be a necessity after the ORC finished in November.  Between the renovation, 2 kids in football and other work obligations I found myself completely drained and ready for some serious R&R.  Given it also happened to be the holiday season I decided to focus not only on recharging but family time.

Alas now that we are solidly moving along in 2022 I wanted to get back to it and share some of the little inexpensive DIY wall art I’ve been working on.

Inexpensive DIY Wall Art Projects

Both art related and so easy you can knock each of them out in less than 20-30 minutes!

First up I purchased this fabulous piece, a painting on a large cut of rough canvas.

Here is the piece, I tacked it up and folded the sides.

After seeing it up, it clearly needed some structure to shine.   So I devised a plan to make a frame and stretch it.  This was very simple and straightforward!

You will need 4 pieces of 2×2 boards.  *Try to select the most straight boards you can.

And like a nut I forgot to photograph the process but here goes…

Lay out your piece and determine the size you want it to be height and width.  This will give you your board length for the 2 top and 2 side pieces.  Cut one (or 2 depending on your preference) extra piece for the center support board.

 Once cut, screw the boards together to create your frame.

Screw down into the vertical pieces

Lastly lay out your canvas and align your frame so as to have the piece centered.  Using a staple gun start in the center of the top.  Pull gently and fold neatly up and over the frame stapling every couple of inches.

Repeat on the bottom starting in the center pulling tightly and stapling as you work your way out to the ends.   Do the same on the sides.

And voila, you have a custom stretched canvas ready to hang!  We spent around $20 on the wood and already had the screws and staples.  A quick, easy and inexpensive project.

 Its so much cleaner looking and its much easier to hang.

My second DIY is another project inspired by a piece of art.  I snagged a painting from one of my favorite artists (Freaker Studio) and when it arrived I knew it needed something extra.

Instead of hanging such a fun piece on a blank white wall I decided to give it a “reverse spotlight”.  I feel like I should trademark that lol.

This was as simple as finding the center behind the cabinet piece, tracing out a circle and painting it.

The color is Gentleman’s Grey by Benjamin Moore and is the same blue I used on the ceiling in the nearby office.  I had some leftover so it was free, but a small sample can would be enough to do this.

I have very textured walls so getting a perfect outline with the paint was going to be tricky.  I did a bit more smoothing out after the shot above and ended up looking like below.

 I decided that getting it absolutely perfect would be tough and that maybe perfection wasn’t the goal this time.  The water ripples in the piece pick up on the circular shape and neither are perfect, thus a lovely mimic.

The reverse spotlight gives such a bold moment to the space and amplifies the incredible piece,  I wonder why it took me so long to do!

Both DIY’s took less than 30 minutes to complete and cost less than $25.

I think 2022 is off to a pretty good start so far and I’m looking forward to many more projects coming up.  One includes a revamp of one of my most loved spaces, the office.  I’m turning it back into a dining room with a lounge aesthetic for a more multipurpose space.  Toss in a dark, mysterious and a tad sexy vibe with an eclectic feel and we’ve got quite the mix.
