Remember when I said I have been in design jail for the last several months? (see that post here) Wellllll, this girl’s broken free and gone hog wild! (I’m sure my hubs will be all “put her back quick!” soon) I shared my master bedroom refresh last week, that I did by just rearranging all my stuff, and I was stoked with the results! So how about a new family room shot?! (Check out how it looked here before the changes!)
This is what happens when the floodgates of creativity are opened and let run free like the wind! I have been wanting to freshen things up in here for awhile and it has finally come together for a whole new feel. It all started with the rug. You guys, this RUG!! My dream rug! It’s a vintage Beni Ourain.
Melrose from Charlotte at The Elegant Nomad
Here’s a little background info on Beni Ourains:
From The Elegant Nomad:
Beni Ourain rugs have recently increased in North-American popularity (due to various retail stores mass production); however the hand-woven masterpieces from Morocco are truly timeless. Traditionally made by Berber tribes in the Atlas Mountains as bed coverings and throws, these carpets are soft and perfect for burying toes. This style tends to be high pile, monochromatic (although may have color accents), and geometric in pattern.
In short, they are handmade gems by incredible folks in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Made with unbelievable quality wool and to last a lifetime. I have never had the incredible fortune of getting to touch one let alone walk on and own one. That is until recently! I am so stoked to share that I am now the proud and excited owner of “Melrose” and she spurred an entire room redo! Melrose came from Charlotte at The Elegant Nomad. Charlotte was so amazing in helping me find the perfect rug for our space! She hand sources and picks these pieces and brings them back to the US for all of us to enjoy! Charlotte has a huge variety of amazing pieces from blankets to rugs to pillows and furniture. Her shop is hand curated with the utmost attention to quality. Definitely worth a lookey-loo!!
On to the changes!! Here’s what I did and the fabulously amazing Melrose!
I moved the brown sofa OUT (actually downstairs, my beloved daybed was broken but that’s a whole other story!) and put in these vintage Homecrest white metal patio chairs. They swivel and rock, you guys the most comfy chairs EVA! Swapped around the elephant stool, lamps and console that used to live along the wall (outside of the shot under the ABC sign) And brought pillows from other rooms in here to tie in with the pinks in the rug!
Here’s a level shot looking from the bar. I’ve got some BIG plans for the walls around the fireplace coming up (in the next week or 2). We’re talking insanely awesome DIY and I am SO excited for it! It’s a big one!!
That’s Jack the Moose, he’s been living in our dining room for 7 years and seemed like this would be a great spot for him to move too. I draped a couple of felt floral garlands on his antlers so he looked like he just poked his head through the bushes! (garlands are from Home Goods!)
And that white cabinet under the tv is new piece. It was a clearance score at Marshalls and perfectly holds all of our games, blanket and nintendo stuff, since I am selling that big round coffee table I needed something for storage!
Shifting over, I brought Horace the giraffe in with his fern butt and belly dancing wrap to give a pop next to the chair and height to the fireplace. Swapped out a couple more pillows to add color to this area and that beautiful art piece above the fireplace? That’s from Colie Leigh Art!! We are currently doing a big charity auction of pieces she created inspired by my design! 25% of profits go to Denver Children’s Hospital! I just brought home this 9ft Norfolk Pine tree the other night from CL for $15! It lost a couple of branches on the way home but it still looks beautiful! And I have this thing with trees so I’m a happy camper!
Switching to the other side of the family room, there are those Homecrest patio chairs! My thrift store elephant side table moved over and holds my morning coffee every day. I’m a rocker so these chairs are my faves!
And the coffee table! This was actually totally free! We had a piece of remnant soapstone I nabbed off of Craigslist several years ago for $10. I knew I would find a use for it, except I didn’t….until now! We just used a small saw to cut the one edge straight so it’s a perfect rectangle and put it on a wood base that came from my brass tray table! Voila, new coffee table!
I like the way it ties into the grays in the rug while providing a cool natural element balanced out with the warm wood base.
This room feels so big and open! I love it so much and we have plenty of seating for the 6 of us along with plenty of color to feast the eyes on. I already had almost all of the pieces in the house somewhere (the only new pieces are the rug, felt garlands, tree and white cabinet under the tv) so it was just a matter of rearranging and reimagining things!
When was the last time you redid a room based on one piece? Do you have a favorite item in your living/family room space? I always love to hear from ya so hit me up in the comments!
