One Room Challenge 2021 Week 2: The Design Plans

It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge and while we dove head first into the challenge with all kinds of destruction I’ve been dying to share with you what I came up with for these spaces.  Last week I shared the scope of the project with all the before’s and the issues of each that need to be addressed. (Check it out here for more in depth info on each space)  Now I get to share with you my plan to jazz them up and take it to  level 10 x 10.

First up a refresher of the “His” space.  It’s just so ho hum, sad and boring.

The One Room Challenge Plan for His Room

Of course I needed to remedy this but in a way that he would love it too.  If you remember from the first post, his request was an all black room with no color.  It took a whole lotta convincing on my part but when he saw this plan all together, he loved it!  And I love it too so its a big win win.  I’m going bold, chic and modern with a hit of quirk.

We’ll be ripping out the carpet and replacing with a gorgeous hardwood floor throughout the upper level.  Then we’ll be wallpapering the entire space in this badass print.  Also painting the ceiling, trim and doors and possibly DIY’ing the bed (we’ll see how it shakes out).  Add in a custom neon, some amazing sconce lighting and MCM touches and you have this funky cool look.

My goal was to address all of the issues in this space while creating the vibe of a downtown urban hotel room with hints of his personality.  It fits him so well but feels very adult at the same time.  Perfect balance of older teenager attitude meets guest room mojo.

Next up we have the “Her” room.

The Plan for Her Room!

I wanted her to walk in and be inspired to create as she loves drawing and reading.  I envisioned her feeling transported to another place not only fostering her imagination but being a place she can retreat to.  After many sessions discussing ideas I came up with this plan.  It’s grown up without being stuffy, hits her boho wish list elements and has some pops of color that we both love.    As for guests, I think it’s a winner there too.

I will be wallpapering this entire space in this incredible paper (more on all of the sources and elements to come!).   The flooring continues here in this gorgeous warm gray color with depth yet softness.  I already found the bed and it’s a crazy story, trust me you’ll want to hear it.  I’m also planning some other artistic elements but the overall vibe is that of being on vacation.

I’m still working on a desk, I have some non-traditional ideas although haven’t found the perfect one yet.  Also I want to incorporate a nice mirror in here for her. (makeup, outfit checks, etc)  And I’m so proud, she chose the fabulous chartreuse color for the handmade lamps so I may have a color lover yet.

I think this is the perfect design to double not only as a fabulous space for an artistic teenager but also as a guest getaway.

The last space I’m transforming is the 2nd story walkway that connects the 2 bedrooms.  Here’s a before of it and the utter hideousness it currently is.

The One Room Challenge Plan for the Open Walkway/Entry

We are running that beautiful hardwood in the bedrooms throughout and will finish out the open sides of the walkway in a matching trim.  Then we are installing this incredible baluster/handrail for a classic yet modern feel. (I am DYING to do this!)  All doors and trim will be painted black and are getting modern sexy glass knobs with brass plates for a fresh glam look.

You knew I couldn’t do this without some kind of color pops amiright?!  The chandelier in the pic above will be replaced with this chartreuse beauty for some oo la la.  And that pink round piece?  I have been wanting to do this in the entry for the better part of a year and I finally went ahead and custom ordered one to be made!  Crossing all fingers and toes it arrives in time to share.  Oh and a hit of bold blue is happening but I haven’t decided the full extent yet.  And there is a distinct possilibility of some sort of mural action, stay tuned for that!

Of course there will be some pivot moments as things go along and I’m sure a few stressful breakdowns but I’m officially stoked to be working on bringing these plans to life.

They hit all the right notes for their individual personalities, cover the guest room bases and incorporate color in a way that my not-as-enthusiastic-about-color kids can get into.
