This last weekend saw me at a local travelling flea! We usually get one or 2 of them the beginning of each year that come through locally and I always try to make sure I get in a visit.
2 things to mention when visiting a travelling flea: they charge an admission fee AND there is usually a Friday evening preview type event. This means that on Friday evenings you pay a higher admission fee but you get to be in for the first pick (I think this one was $12). I love to go for that Friday first pick but honestly I forgot this go round, I know right what has become of me?! So I managed to get there about halfway through the second day, (admission was $7) expecting all the good stuff to be gone but I figured why not give it a go?
One stall at the market with so much cute stuff!
First thing I see when I walk in is this amazing old general store bins cabinet. I have been wanting one of these FOREVER but they are always $$$$. I’m a bargain/budget shopper (think $ maybe $$) and could never justify the high price tag. Alas here I am with no general store cabinet. (Sniff sniff ugly cry)
There I stood feasting my eyes on this beauty and immediately checked the price, I was surprised to see it was about half of what they usually sell for so it definitely peaked my interest. But I wanted to think on it and so I walked around the rest of the market. Nothing caught my eye so I circled back around and took another look at the cabinet. I struck up a convo with the seller about the dimensions and where it came from. I then asked her if they were negotiable and she said there was some room. Cue my giddy gleeful squeal, internally only, poker face people.
As we were chatting 3 other shoppers came over to give it a lookey loo and I made the decision to go for it cause mama was about to throw down with said 3 other people. I offered 20% less than they had it listed for and they accepted!
A super cool old trunk I spotted.
This is an excellent tip particularly when you are visiting a travelling flea (a travelling flea is when sellers come from outside areas to sell their pieces/items). They have to pack up whatever they don’t sell and take it home so this makes them much more likely to negotiate prices and it leaves the door open for an even better deal for you! When I made my offer I made sure to let them know I would take the piece as soon as they were ready to move it so no hassle for them waiting for me to pick it up. An added sweetener to the deal!
Done and done! We loaded her up and were on our way in 15 minutes! I seriously love this thing, it’s one of those items that brings a story and a life to any space it’s in, with it’s worn wood top, all of the old nails used in it’s construction and the chippy paint. These pieces give a space some life. I can see at least 10 different uses for it; console table, modified dresser, kitchen island, entry table, mudroom storage cabinet, glassware storage cabinet, etc.
It’s pretty even from the side! Le sigh
I am actually selling 2 other pieces on good ole CL that this one is replacing as it’s so versatile. I really try to focus on furniture I know I can use in more than one way, particularly given the fact I’m always moving things around. And this fit the bill perfectly!
So take a gander at the fleas in your area (travelling or not) they always have amazing pieces big and small. And always ask about making an offer, the worst they can say is no!
And a friendly reminder that ole subscribey is chillin on the right if you don’t want to miss anything happenin up in here!
